Ankara July 7–8: Travel Advisory, Road Closures & Security for NATO Summit 2026
A practical guide for journalists, delegates, and travelers in Ankara during the 36th NATO Heads of State Summit. Road closures, security perimeters, media transport, equipment deadlines, and essential contacts — compiled from official NATO and Turkish government sources.
Quick Reference
Road Closures and City Access
Ankara will undergo significant traffic disruption on July 7–8, 2026. Many major roads across the city will be closed for security reasons on both summit days. The scale of closures is expected to affect transit throughout central Ankara, not only in the immediate vicinity of the Beştepe Presidential Compound.
Key operational facts for travelers:
- →Access to the International Media Centre (IMC) will not be possible by private vehicle or taxi on July 7–8. Only official shuttle services will operate between designated hotels and the IMC.
- →Security checkpoints will be established across the city. Allow significantly extended travel times for any movement in Ankara on summit days.
- →Flight scheduling delays are expected at Ankara Esenboğa Airport (ESB). Build buffer time into arrival and departure plans around July 7–8.
- →Travelers not directly involved in the summit are advised to minimize movement in central Ankara on July 7–8.
Media Accreditation: Key Dates and Status
The deadline for NATO summit media accreditation was June 7, 2026 at 23:59 CEST. This deadline has passed. Late applications are not being considered due to high demand.
For media representatives who secured accreditation:
- →The International Media Centre operates July 5–8 at the Summit venue. Check-in and equipment setup begins July 5.
- →Bulky equipment can be brought to the IMC on July 5 by appointment only. Contact: equipment@iletisim.gov.tr before June 30.
- →All large equipment and materials exceeding standard X-ray size limits must be delivered to the IMC by 18:00 on July 6.
- →Media transport between accreditation office, hotels, and IMC will be provided by the Host Nation (Türkiye).
- →All summit media events will be transmitted live by the Summit Host TV to the media centre, online, and via satellite.
Accommodation
NATO has recommended that accredited media book accommodation at designated 4- or 5-star hotels in Ankara. Choosing one of the recommended hotels is strongly advised — only these hotels will be served by official shuttle transport on summit days. Travelers staying elsewhere will not have access to shuttle services and cannot reach the IMC by private vehicle on July 7–8.
Hotel lists are available through NATO's official accreditation channels. Contact the NATO Press Office for the current list of national press officers, which was expected to be available by mid-June 2026.
Security Environment
Ankara will be operating under an exceptionally high security posture on July 7–8. Expect:
- →Hard perimeter around the summit venue and adjacent areas
- →Increased police and security presence across the city
- →Checkpoints on major routes — carry identification at all times
- →Increased cyber activity — probing of communications and digital infrastructure is expected in the summit period
All foreign citizens traveling to Türkiye must carry a valid travel document accepted by Türkiye. Entry requirements should be verified with the relevant Turkish consular authority in advance.
Bilateral Events
Bilateral meetings between delegations are not part of the official summit programme and will not be covered by NATO's official media arrangements. Details of bilateral events should be sought directly from the relevant delegations. The summit's formal opening is July 7; the summit concludes in the afternoon of July 8.
